The Basic AR15 Armorer's course, is designed to provide the armorer with knowledge and skills necessary to maintain the AR-15 type weapon system in areas to include nomenclature, field stripping, complete dis-assembly and assembly, cycle of operation, function inspection, cleaning, lubrication, trouble-shooting, accessory selection and installation, and use of special tools.

The cost for the Basic AR-15 Armorer's course is $325 per student.
All materials and tools are provided. Students are asked to provide their own safety glasses.
No previous experience needed!

Training Application

Defensive Handgun 1

16 Hours
20 students

Topics include (but are not limited to): Marksmanship fundamentals, gun handling (including presentation from holster, reloading, malfunction clearance, one-hand operation), shooting from positions.
Required Equipment: Eye & ear protection, brimmed hat, semi-automatic pistol or revolver, holster, 2 additional magazines or speed-loaders, cleaning kit, minimum 500 rounds ammunition. Knee & elbow protection recommended. Body armor recommended for law enforcement.
Prerequisite: None.

Defensive Handgun 2

16 Hours
20 students

Topics include (but are not limited to): Marksmanship fundamentals review, gun handling review (including reloading, malfunction clearance), support-hand shooting, low-light & flashlight operation, shooting from positions, pivots, movement.
Required Equipment: Eye & ear protection, brimmed hat, semi-automatic pistol or revolver, holster, 2 additional magazines or speed-loaders, flashlight, cleaning kit, minimum 500 rounds ammunition. Knee & elbow protection recommended. Body armor recommended for law enforcement.
Prerequisite: DH116 or equivalent.

Defensive Handgun 3

16 Hours
20 students

Topics include (but are not limited to): Marksmanship fundamentals review, gun handling review, shooting on the move, moving targets, advanced low-light techniques, advanced positional shooting.
Required Equipment: Eye & ear protection, brimmed hat, semi-automatic pistol or revolver, holster, 2 additional magazines or speed-loaders, flashlight, cleaning kit, minimum 500 rounds ammunition. Knee & elbow protection recommended. Body armor recommended for law enforcement.
Prerequisite: DH216 or equivalent.

 

Defensive Carbine 1

16 Hours
20 students

Topics include (but are not limited to): Nomenclature, fieldstripping & maintenance, weapon zeroing, loading & unloading, marksmanship fundamentals, carry & ready positions, introduction to shooting positions, malfunction clearance, transitions.
Required Equipment: Eye & ear protection, brimmed hat, suitable rifle/carbine with sling, iron sights (optics optional), 4 magazines, cleaning kit, duty handgun & holster, minimum 300 rounds carbine & 50 rounds pistol ammunition. Knee & elbow protection recommended. Body armor recommended for law enforcement.
Prerequisite: None.

 

Defensive Carbine 2

16 Hours
20 students

Topics include (but are not limited to): Marksmanship fundamentals review, gun handling review, support-hand shooting, low-light & flashlight operation, shooting from positions, pivots, movement.
Required Equipment: Eye & ear protection, brimmed hat, suitable rifle/carbine with sling, iron sights (optics optional), 4 magazines, cleaning kit, duty handgun & holster, minimum 1 handheld flashlight (additional weapon-mounted flashlight recommended), minimum 300 rounds carbine & 50 rounds pistol ammunition. Knee & elbow protection recommended. Body armor recommended for law enforcement.

Defensive Carbine 3

16 Hours
20 students

Topics include (but are not limited to): Marksmanship fundamentals review, gun handling review, shooting on the move, moving targets, advanced low-light techniques, advanced positional shooting, long-range engagement.
Required Equipment: Eye & ear protection, brimmed hat, suitable rifle/carbine with sling, iron sights (optics optional), 4 magazines, cleaning kit, duty handgun & holster, minimum 1 handheld flashlight (additional weapon-mounted flashlight recommended), minimum 300 rounds carbine & 50 rounds pistol ammunition. Knee & elbow protection recommended. Body armor recommended for law enforcement.
Prerequisite: DC216 or equivalent.

Our instructors

 

Don Alwes

Don Alwes, a 36-year veteran of law enforcement and tactical training, joined the staff of DoubleStar Corp. in 2008 as a liason for the company’s law enforcement customers. He also conducts tactical training programs at the company’s headquarters.

Don has taught courses for the National Tactical Officer’s Association, the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training and the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors. Topics for the courses, which offer certification or continuing education credits, have included active shooter response, rapid deployment, terrorism, homeland security, school and workplace violence, and vulnerability assessment.

Don is a member of the National Tactical Officers Association, the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors, the Police Marksman Association and the International Association for Counter-terrorism and Security Professionals.

 

Nick Collier

Nick Collier has worn many hats since he started with DoubleStar in 2002.  Since then he has been working with the AR15/ M16 weapon system daily.  From the mechanics of the weapon to competition shooting, taking advantage of every opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the platform. 
Nick is the Director of Customer Service and PR for DoubleStar and an instructor for the DSCTA.  Nick stays busy representing DoubleStar not only on the road at trade shows, but in media outlets and 3 Gun competitions.  A Lifetime NRA member, Nick is a staunch supporter of 2nd Amendment rights.  As an instructor, Nick has something for every skill level.

 

Tim Mourning

Tim has been with DoubleStar since 2006 and has been involved with the DoubleStar Training Academy since 2012.  In his time with the company, he has held various positions which has increased his knowledge of the AR-15 platform.    In his daily duties, Tim is one of our Customer Support Specialists giving him a good hands-on relationship with customers and broad knowledge of user interaction with the AR-15.  Tim enjoys shooting in his personal time.  Being raised around firearms, he understands the importance of supporting the 2nd Amendment and volunteers with the Friends of The NRA local committee in his free time. 
Tim is also a member of the NRA and is a NRA Certified Range Safety Officer.  He also travels the country training new dealers in our various product lines as well as representing the company at trade shows such as the yearly NRA Convention and the SHOT Show.  Tim is very experienced and knowledgeable.  He can teach you how to be comfortable working on your AR platform rifle.
